The go-to goodie of the moment

A self-serving creation at Pure FroYo, 108 Merrimack St.

Frozen yogurt fever has struck Greater Lowell.

Diagnosis: Serious addiction.

California and New York succumbed years ago to the wildly successful Pinkberry chain, but we’re hooked now. And the flavor is locally owned and independent.

Since January, at least three frozen yogurt shops have all opened within a few miles of each other.

The newest — just in time for the summer heat — is Pure FroYo at 108 Merrimack St., riding the next wave of self-serve, low calorie “froyo” sold by the ounce.

To understand the frenzy over frozen yogurt, you must know this is not the same frozen yogurt you ate while sporting a mullet or pink leopard leg warmers back in the 80s.

Today’s yogurt isn’t trying to taste like ice cream by adding artificial sweeteners. Some say it’s healthier, with a slightly tart taste that comes from active yogurt cultures. It’s also full of probiotics, known as “friendly bacteria,” that aid in digestion and help the body’s immune system.

The self-serve feature is another difference. It allows customers to make more healthy choices by filling their bowl with just 3 or 4 ounces of yogurt to mix with a variety of fresh fruit and nuts. In the same respect, heavy-handed diners can end up with a caloric fate worse than a triple-scoop fudge sundae.

Local shops offer a variety of toppings ranging from healthy — mango, strawberries and kiwi — to indulgent — brownie and cheesecake bits, M&Ms, gummy bears and melted peanut butter to name a few.

Minus the toppings, the cool and swirling phenomenon known as froyo has half the calories of an equivalent portion of ice cream — and it tastes great.

What’s not to love about that?
