LaNeah Menzies was born and raised in Lowell, spending her childhood singing along to performers on Soul Train and MTV.
Now the Lowell native is singing before sold-out shows under her stage name, “Starshell.”
The hot young singer/songwriter is the first female signed by Mary J. Blige’s Matriarch Entertainment music label and co-signed by one of the most respected and powerful record company executives and label CEO, Vincent Herbert of Streamline Records.
With a French and Brazilian mother and an African American dad, Starshell says her music has an international appeal based on the melting pot of influences she has acquired through her Lowell background.
Breaking into the music scene fresh out of college as a songwriter, Starshell gained recognition as an accomplished songwriter when she co-penned multi platinum selling single by Kanye West called, “Love Lockdown” (2008). She followed this up in 2009 with “I Can See in Color” and “Closer” for Mary J. Blige. The former was featured in the Oscar-nominated film Precious while the latter is one of numerous highlights on Blige’s last studio album, Stronger With Each Tear.
Focusing on her solo career as a singer, Starshell has written and co-produced the majority of the songs on her debut album Liberation. Her first smash breakout single “Birthday Girl” was released in January.
